The Nativity: History, Theology & Literature
Watch my Christmas lecture now
Dear readers,
Last week, something really cool happened: I threw my (first ever!) online lecture.
Since ‘tis the season, the purpose of the lecture was to walk through nativity, the birth stories of Jesus in Matthew and Luke. I tried to place these texts in their ancient literary contexts, and to unpack some of the debates surrounding their historicity.
It was an immense privilege to meet many of you for the first time, and to put some faces to names. We had about fifteen people tune in, from Denmark all the way to Colorado, and the session was followed by a really engaging time of discussion.
I know that some of you wanted to see the lecture but weren’t able to make it. If that’s you: do not fear! I am planning to host monthly lectures and discussions on Behind the Gospels in 2026 (a ‘New Years Resolution’), and you can now watch the lecture below.
All that is left is for me to wish you a peaceful and blessed Christmas, for those of you who are celebrating. Thank you for all your support in making this happen!
– John
