The Gospels’ christology is a minefield. As I noted in my primer, Is Jesus Divine in the Gospels?, it can seem like scholars hold a sea of contradictory opinions on the topic.

On the one hand, most scholars think that the Gospels depict Jesus as divine. On the other, the same scholars often refer to the Synoptics as having a ‘lower’ Christology than John, or to Jesus ‘becoming’ God’s son at a certain stage in his life.

Following my primer, I thought it would be helpful to provide you with an annotated bibliography – a reading list of the sort you might find on a University course.

I have organised this into those who hold (more or less) traditionally ‘high’ views of the Gospels’ Christology, and those who hold more classically ‘low’ views. I hope you find this list of texts helpful in your own academic journeys behind the Gospels....
